Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 3, 2026

This Privacy Policy describes how Reciproc8 ("Reciproc8", "we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, and shares your information when you use our mobile application, our website at www.thereciproc8project.com, and related services (together, the "Service").

The Short Version

  • We do not sell your personal information. We do not share it with data brokers or advertising networks, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.
  • We collect what we need to run a barter community: your account and profile, the offers and seeks you post, your messages and reviews, and how you use the app.
  • We use technology, including AI services acting on our behalf, to match you with other members and to keep the community safe by screening listings, photos, and messages.
  • We do not track your GPS location. Your location in Reciproc8 is the ZIP code and neighborhood you tell us.
  • You can delete your account at any time from Settings in the app, and deletion is permanent.

Information You Provide

Account and Profile

  • Phone number. You sign in with your phone number and a one-time code sent by text message. Your phone number is your account identity.
  • Profile details. Your name, username, profile photo, bio, and general location (city, state, ZIP code, and neighborhood). You may optionally provide your email address, date of birth, and gender.
  • Preferences. Matching preferences such as how far you are willing to travel, whether you offer remote services, and how you prefer to communicate.
  • Invitation codes. The invitation or claim code you used to join, which lets us attribute your signup to the member, partner, or campaign that invited you.

Content You Create

  • The offers and seeks you post, including titles, descriptions, categories, tags, and photos
  • Messages you send to other members within an exchange
  • Reviews you write after completing an exchange
  • Reports, feedback, and support requests you submit

Chat Conversations on Our Website

If you use the skill-discovery chat on our website, we log the full conversation, including anything you type before submitting, so we can improve the experience and follow up on your interest. Chat transcripts are automatically deleted after 90 days. Please do not share sensitive personal information in the chat.

Newsletter

If you subscribe to our newsletter, your email address is collected through a form hosted by Beehiiv, our newsletter provider, and is used only to send you the newsletter. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any issue.

Information Collected Automatically

  • Usage events. Actions you take in the app and on the website, such as creating an offer, opting into a match, or completing an exchange. These events are linked to your account so we can understand and improve the Service. We deliberately exclude the text of your listings, messages, names, and email addresses from analytics events.
  • Device and log data. IP address, device type, operating system, app version, and diagnostic data such as crash reports and error logs.
  • Push notification token. If you enable push notifications, we store a device token so we can deliver them.
  • Cookies. The website uses cookies for sign-in sessions and analytics. We do not use advertising cookies.

Location Information

We do not track or store GPS coordinates. Your location in Reciproc8 is the general area you provide: ZIP code, neighborhood, and city. We use it to match you with members near you and to show your general area on your profile and listings. We never display your exact address, and we do not follow your location in the background.

How We Use Your Information

  • To run the Service: create and manage your account, publish your listings, deliver messages, track exchanges, and maintain barter points and reviews.
  • To find your matches: we process the offers and seeks you share, including with AI, to understand what you offer and need and to suggest good exchange partners.
  • To keep the community safe: we screen listings, profiles, photos, and messages with automated tools and human review, and we act on reports from members.
  • To communicate with you: sign-in codes by text message, push notifications about your exchanges, and service emails such as match and exchange updates.
  • To improve the Service: analytics, debugging, and research into how features are used.
  • To attribute invitations: connecting your signup to the invitation code that brought you here.

AI and Automated Systems

Reciproc8 uses AI services, acting under our instructions and on our behalf, for two purposes: matching and safety. We believe you should know exactly what that means:

  • Matching. The text of your offers and seeks is processed by Anthropic (Claude) to understand the skills involved, and by Voyage AI to create numerical representations (embeddings) used to find compatible members. Match candidates may also be evaluated by an AI model for fit before they are suggested.
  • Text safety screening. Listings, bios, proposal messages, and exchange messages are automatically screened by Anthropic (Claude) for content that violates our Community Guidelines. Content that fails screening may be hidden, redacted, or held for human review.
  • Image safety screening. Profile photos and listing photos may be automatically screened by Hive AI for prohibited imagery before they are shown to the community. Images that fail screening are quarantined.
  • Human review. Automated decisions that affect your content or account can be escalated to human review, and you can appeal any moderation decision by contacting us.

These providers process your content only to provide these services to us. We do not permit them to sell your information.

Optional Identity Verification

You may choose to verify your identity by submitting a selfie and a photo of your government-issued ID. These images are compared on our own servers, in memory only, and are never stored. The only things we keep are whether the verification succeeded and when. Verification is optional and earns a verified badge on your profile.

Analytics

We use PostHog to understand how members use the Service. Analytics events are linked to your account (they are not anonymized) so we can debug problems and improve features. Events are designed to be data-minimal: they carry identifiers, categories, and flags, not the text of what you write. We also use Sentry for crash and error reporting, which may include your IP address and device details. If you would like to opt out of analytics, contact us at contact@thereciproc8project.com. For more about PostHog, see posthog.com/privacy.

Communications

  • Text messages. By providing your phone number, you consent to receive one-time sign-in codes by SMS. Message and data rates may apply. We do not send marketing text messages.
  • Push notifications. Optional, and controlled by your device settings. Used for exchange activity such as new matches, requests, and messages.
  • Email. Service emails about your matches and exchanges may be sent through Resend, our email provider. Every service email includes a one-click unsubscribe, and we keep a suppression list so an unsubscribed address stays unsubscribed.

How We Share Information

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for advertising. We share information only in these situations:

With Service Providers

Companies that process data on our behalf, under contract, to run the Service:

  • Supabase (database, authentication, and file storage)
  • Twilio (delivery of SMS sign-in codes)
  • Anthropic (AI matching and content safety screening)
  • Voyage AI (matching embeddings)
  • Hive AI (image safety screening)
  • PostHog (product analytics)
  • Sentry (crash and error reporting)
  • Google Firebase (push notification delivery)
  • Resend (service email delivery)
  • Beehiiv (newsletter, only if you subscribe)

With Other Members

Your profile (name, photo, bio, general location, verified badge, rating, and review count) is visible to other members. Your reviews are attributed to you by design; Reciproc8 does not support anonymous reviews. Messages you send in an exchange are visible to the other participant.

On the Public Website

Published offers and seeks can appear on the public, logged-out areas of our website so that neighbors can discover the community. A public listing shows its title, description, category, general area, and the profile display information of the member who posted it. Your phone number and email address are never shown publicly.

Community Members Who Are Not Yet on the App

If you shared an offer with us at a community event or through a partner before joining the app, we may list that offer, read-only, so members can express interest. Before we do, we send you a notice with a simple way to opt out. Your contact information is never published; our team relays interest to you and only connects you with a member if you say yes.

Legal and Business Transfers

  • To comply with law, legal process, or enforceable government requests, or to protect the rights and safety of our members and the public
  • In connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, in which case this Privacy Policy will continue to apply to your information

Data Retention

  • Account and content: kept while your account is active
  • Account deletion: deleting your account permanently deletes it; this is a hard delete, not a deactivation
  • Website chat transcripts: deleted after 90 days
  • Community event listings: deleted 14 days after the event ends
  • Email suppression list: kept so that unsubscribe requests are honored permanently
  • Analytics and crash data: retained according to the configured retention of our analytics and error-reporting providers

Your Rights and Choices

  • Access and correction: view and edit your profile and listings at any time in the app
  • Deletion: delete your account from Settings in the app, or email us and we will delete it for you
  • Notifications: control push notifications in your device settings and unsubscribe from service email with one click
  • Analytics opt-out: contact us at contact@thereciproc8project.com
  • Moderation appeals: if automated screening affects your content or account, contact us and a person will review the decision

US State Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, state law (including the California Consumer Privacy Act) may give you rights to know, access, correct, delete, and port your personal information, and to opt out of its sale or sharing. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined under California law, and we do not use it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We will never discriminate against you for exercising your privacy rights. To exercise any right, email contact@thereciproc8project.com; we will verify your request through the phone number or email associated with your account.

Visitors Outside the United States

The Service is operated from the United States and is intended for US residents. If you visit our website from elsewhere, your information will be processed in the United States. Where local law grants you additional rights (such as those under the GDPR), you may exercise them by contacting us.

Children's Privacy

Reciproc8 is for adults. You must be at least 18 years old to use the Service. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18, and we delete any such information we discover.

Security

We protect your information with encryption in transit, access controls that limit each part of the system to the data it needs, and image screening that fails closed: photos are held out of circulation until they can be verified safe. If automated text screening cannot run, the content is flagged for human review. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we design for safety first.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the updated policy on this page and update the "Last updated" date. For material changes, we will provide notice in the app or by email.
